The World Through the Dutch Eyes
What do you know about the Dutch?
Except the stereotype that smoking weed is their only occupation as a pastime, in reality they’re one of the most fascinating and colorful people on Earth.
Why?
One word: Bicycle.
A Vehicle Above All
There are no words to describe how unique their approach is when it comes to structuring cities.
The basic formula looks somehow like this: Bicycles > everything else

Roads, lamps, enormous parking lots, more roads
These are dedicated solely for making cycling as convenient as possible, to promote a healthy and eco-friendly transport-lifestyle in the country.
You might not be surprised, but even in the middle of a snowstorm they gladly grab their beloved two-wheelers and cycle to the store with a smile on their face.
The most impressing things is that they’re able to cycle dozens of kilometers without a sweat.
I had the opportunity to witness this unearthly performance during my visit last summer, where they invited me to come along on a little expedition.
“It’ll be fun” – They said
I was foolish enough to believe that statement, so I jumped into my shoes and went right after them on a borrowed bicycle.
Little did I know, that the city we were going to explore was a bit more than 22 kilometers away.
Remember Donkey from Shrek on their way to the city?
That describes the trip better than any word ever could.
Because of the small dunes here and there and my inability to keep up with their speed, due to the lack of this cultural training, the cruise took around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Twice.
On the way back (after around 30-32 kilometers) I asked them if it’s normal to feel utter numbness in your buttocks, but the only response I got was: “Haha, you’ll get used it“
After we arrived home I could barely walk, but I’ve never been happier for the fact that my foot, once again, are on the ground.
The next day I just decided to stay in bed and finally try out this western thing called “Netflix”
To be honest, I was not disappointed.
A Challenge Worth Conquering
Making that 44km expedition out of nowhere wasn’t just a victory for my legs, but on that day a seed of love for this culture was planted in my heart.
That seed is the reason that allows me to be right here, right now.
If you ever find yourself yearning for something you haven’t seen or done before, let me remind you that those things are out there waiting for you to experience them, no matter how distant they might seem.
Keep those seeds close to your heart for a while, and one day you’ll notice a little flower slowly emerging on the surface, which will bloom into the life you’ve always dreamed about having.
Take care,
Erik
